Sea of SRDs

If you’re planning to use an existing game system in something you plan to write, you need to understand the licensing of that game system.

Whilst many games have ‘Community Content Programmes‘ on sites like DriveThruRPG, those programmes are designed to publish for that game system solely on that platform. In other words, you cannot use those to self-publish through other channels.

To help navigate this “Sea of SRDs” we have compiled a list of those we know about, and where appropriate we have also included any licenses associated. What follows is a list from a variety of publishers of all sizes, it’s not definitive by any means but it may be of use.

Types

  • [CC] — Creative Commons (e.g., CC-BY 4.0, CC-BY-SA, CC0). Public domain or standardized open-culture licenses.
  • [3PL] — Third-Party / Game License (Includes OGL, ORC, and other publisher licenses).
